All materials from the achieves (Archival materials) indicate that the petition of a merchant Abram Gordon and Lejb Shereshevskii to permit them to open in Grodno tobacco factory was discussed by Grodno provincial board on July, 17th, 1861. Due to the fact that Leib Shereshevskii had no merchant rights, permission to open a factory was given to Abram Gordon. We think that this date - July 17, 1861, can rightly be considered as the birth date and the date of establishment of the Shereshevskii`s tobacco factory (now Public Limited Company "Grodno Tobacco Factory Neman). The Shereshevskii`s factory business practically was of the same age as some very famous now firms in our country and in the West. The company «Philip Morris» was founded in1847. For the first time it had specialization in making hand-twisting cigarettes with Turkish tobacco. The company «J.E. Ligget and Brother» was established in 1849 in St. Louis and tobacco Factory "Balkan Star" was formed in 1850 in Yaroslavl (Russia).

The traditions of tobacco production in Grodno are of the same age with the major Western and national tobacco companies. And the fact that high quality requirements to the products were typical for the Shereshevskii can be proved thanks to the next inscription on their production: "The quality is much improved against the former!"

The factory production was well known in the Russian Empire and abroad. The factory of L. Shereshevskii had a trademark approved by the Russian government. It produced smoking tobacco, snuff, cigarettes, cigars and shag. In 1882 the cigarettes from the Grodno tobacco factory were awarded medals of Alexander the Emperor of Russia at the industrial exhibition in Moscow. They also won "Silver" in Amsterdam (1884), New Orleans (1885). The jury of the world exhibition in Paris (1889) also paid attention to the tobacco manufacturer from Grodno I.L .Shereshevskii, he was awarded another silver medal. Except the tobacco factory in Grodno the Shereshevskii had a cigarette-sleeve factory and sleeve plant, which were founded in 1880 and in 1882 respectively. In 1907 the tobacco factory was converted into a public limited company, its annual production at this time was more than 4 million imperial rubles. The First World War and the occupation of Grodno by the Kaiser troops caused the reduction and decline of production. 1924 can be characterized as the year of the nationalization of the factory by the Polish state, and the dismissal of a great many of workers. It was very difficult for the factory to cope with global economic crisis in 1929. The reconstruction of the factory began after the reunification of Western Belarus and the USSR (1939), but at the beginning of the Great Patriotic War the factory was almost completely destroyed. But the post-war reconstruction of the enterprise began in 1945. After 1955 and for the next 25 years the company had been the leader in the field. A tobacco production association "Neman" was established in 1964 in Belarus, the Grodno Tobacco factory became the parent company of the association. The plant was considered to be the flagship of the national production of cigarettes, among the three largest producers of this product in the country in the Soviet times.

Association Grodnotabakprom was abolished and converted into Grodno tobacco factory Neman in January 1, 1988. GTF Neman was registered by Grodno executive committee as the "Republican production unitary enterprise " Grodno tobacco factory "Neman" in 29 December 2000.

Due to the decision of the Grodno Executive Committee № 890 from 29.12.2007, Republican production unitary enterprise "Grodno Tobacco Factory «Neman was transformed into Public Limited Company "Grodno Tobacco Factory « Neman, which is the successor to the rights and obligations RPUE "Grodno Tobacco factory Neman.

Currently the factory employs over 900 people who have significant experience in tobacco industry, and the management team consists of the best managers.

1999 was the year of the beginning of the next technical re-equipment and reconstruction of GTF "Neman" which had come to the end on December, 1, 2002. Acquisition and installation of a modern high-efficiency tobacco and cigarette equipment of Italian firms GARBUIO and SASIB also became the result of the reconstruction. Thanks to this equipment the factory received an opportunity to produce competitive tobacco items of the same quality with other tobacco items from all over the world

The Grodno tobacco factory buys only high-quality raw and materials from more than 20 countries of the World. Among them we can mention Italy, Spain, India, Greece, China, Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Zimbabwe, Iran, Lebanon, Mozambique, Moldova, Tanzania, Uzbekistan, the republic of South Africa, etc. Also GTF Neman receives various minerals from Lithuania, Germany, France, Russia, Italy, Austria, etc.

And the factory has set itself the task of satisfaction of modern smokers` needs by release of high-quality import substitution products.

We are to say that today the Grodno Tobacco factory "Neman" doesn`t stand still because the park of the process equipment is constantly renewed to provide the production of the demanded kinds of goods.

In early 2009 the factory purchased and installed a modern highly productive equipment to organize the release of Super slims size and King size cigarettes from German companies «Hauni» and «Focke».

A current portfolio of "Neman" includes more than 30 brands of cigarettes to satisfy every taste.

The most important factor which proves the quality of the released on the factory goods is the certificate which is given for the compliance of the system of quality management with international standards ISO 9001-2001. This certificate is registered in the National Certificate System of Belarus. RPUE "Grodno Tobacco Factory Neman has already mastered the production of new brands of cigarettes in August 2004.

The Grodno Tobacco Factory has carried the rich traditions and the high name through all history to our time. The fact, that the products by "Neman" were awarded three medals at the International specialized exhibition "Beverages and Tobacco@, which took place in Moscow, is a confirmation of the previous sentence.
